Electric Maid ATS Mixer

March 14, 2010
3-6pm

$8 suggested donation (metro friendly location, Takoma Park, DC/MD)

Kallisti Tribal presents the Electric Maid ATS Mixer! For the curious to the experienced in American Tribal Style Bellydance. Have you taken or observed a few classes, danced from video, or attended Tribal Pura or General Skills certification workshops? Have you wished there were more opportunities to just play and exchange this dance vocabulary with others? The Mixer is a low-key event for dancers to flex their improv muscles outside of class or performance in an intimate, sharing community arts venue. No pressure, no recital, no judgement, no costumes, just time to mingle and dance with the far flung MD/DC/NoVa community. Dancers should come prepared to freely improv with others based on their comfort level in American Tribal Style (ATS) as established by Fat Chance Bellydance (FCBD).

Dancers will self-select at the door their dance experience level (newbie/some experience/skilled),
from which trios will be selected lottery style to mix it up and dance together on a small stage or open floor to short sets of dj'd music! Depending on the space arrangements, some larger chorus or circle arrangements may also be possible. While all brands of tribal improv are welcome, we suggest leading only with ATS moves so that we can dance with the confidence and ease that comes with sharing a single vocabulary. Here are some examples of the moves and principles, and there are many videos to study from on DVD and youtube, and of course, our local ATS teachers who've posted their class offerings in these forums!

Get ready to hafla like we wanna!

Watch this space for more details!

*Please note, this is not an FCBD studio-affiliated event.

This class follows the FCBD Level 1 Format

Tribal bellydance is a fun and empowering dance form that creates camaraderie among women, celebrates the feminine form, and builds core strength. This class will be specific to American Tribal Style (ATS) as established by Fat Chance Bellydance. ATS utilizes non-verbal cues to allow a group of dancers to improvise and dance together in the moment.
Over six weeks, you will learn basic tribal bellydance posture and movements, as well as the cues and formations to dance in a group improvisationally. Each week will also include drills and conditioning as a foundation to build the strength and flexibility to execute movements safely and gracefully. Other topics, such as costuming, dance history, and music appreciation will be presented.
No dance experience is necessary. Please wear comfortable, close-fitting attire, and a quiet hip scarf (no coins) if you like. You will need zills by week three of the session.

The Third Annual Kallisti Tribal Inappropriate hafla

2009 Inappropriate Hafla

Saturday, September 12, 2009
1pm to 5pm
131 Brightside Ave, Pikesville, MD 21208.

This is an outdoor event, so plan accordingly. Come a bit early to snag a space with some shade (bring your own chairs/blankets/whatever you need to sit and be comfy). Parasols, sun block, and bug spray recommended. Everyone is encouraged to being food/drinks to share, or at least to take care of yourself. Also, feel free to bring hula hoops, poi, bubbles, or any other fun lawn toys for general hanging out.

NO KIDS ALLOWED!!!!
Though we love the kiddies, this hafla is for adults only. Since some content may not be suitable for children, we are asking that no one under 16 years old attend. Not that we're planning for crazy, full on nekkid (It is Lyra's backyard and she wants to be able to look her neighbors in the eye, haha), we want performers to feel comfortable with doing more risque or racy pieces. So, sorry, but the little ones need to stay at the homestead.

We still have space for a few dancers! Please contact Amy if you're interested!

About Kallisti Tribal

kallisti

Kallisti Tribal is a home grown Baltimore troupe that draws from a solid base in American Tribal Style belly dance while honoring the influence of other dance and movement traditions. Amy, Flissy, Lyra and Nora have melded their influences together in a style Amy calls "ATS-esque", which may also be knows as Tribal Group Improv or Improv Tribal Style. They use their dance vocabulary to create an improvisation choreography on the fly, taking cues from the music and each other, bringing you the joyful dance that is distinctly Kallisti Tribal.
